Emerging Artist Grant

Project Name: Cyber Expansion

Project work sample / discipline: Visual Arts / Crafts

Project activity: Marketing

Project Description

My son and I want to improve my artist website and help gain more exposure as an artist, leading to more success in the art world. We especially want the residents of other states to be able to view and buy my work online. Over several years, I have produced artwork for the residents of my hometown. Now, my son and I want to market my work to a broader customer base. I want to have business cards made and be able to reproduce my work through printing and mail it to people across the country. By enabling me to reach people in other states through an improved artist website and business cards and the reproduction and mailing of my work, this project will make it possible for many people to view and buy my work. My son and I want this project to end with the mass production of my work which we hope a lot of people will view and buy.

I live in Union, South Carolina. There is not much for me to do in the field of art there. Given the chance, my son and I believe that can change. Over several years, I have produced artwork for many families and a local funeral home. I have created paintings from a memorial plate of a baby who was stillborn to a family portrait which appears as if everyone was there for the painting at the same time, but they were not. I painted the viewing room and chapel for the local funeral home. In the funeral home, I painted two wall murals: doves flying to heaven in the viewing room and praying hands in the chapel. Now, we just want me to have the chance to become more well-known in the art world which we believe improving by my artist website, creating and handing out business cards, and mass producing my work would help me do. After this project is completed, we want me to have more out of state customers than local ones.

My project connects to four of the South Carolina Arts Commission's values: accountability, courage, creativity, and relationships. All my customers can find my email address and / or cell phone number by checking my website. That way if they have any concerns and/ or questions about the quality of my artwork or the status of their orders, they can reach out to me. This connects with the South Carolina Arts Commission's value of accountability due to me trying to be transparent and honest with my customers and maintain my integrity as an artist. This project connects to the value of courage. I adjust my shipping and payment options to the needs of my low-income and single parent out of state customers. If they are a single mom or dad and cannot find good childcare and must stayed at home with their children, they can have their purchases shipped to their homes. If they cannot afford to pay for their purchases in full, there are payment plan options available. Also, even though my out of state customers have to wait longer than my local customers to receive my artwork, they are able to contact me again by email or phone to ensure that their products are high-quality. All my customers receive a high-quality work of art no matter how far they live. In addition to the values of accountability and courage, this project connects to the value of creativity. People across the country are able to have prints of my artwork. They are able to have copies of landscapes, portraits, book illustrations and abstract art which come from the original pieces. That way everyone receives copies of artwork which are exactly the same in appearance. This project connects to the value of relationships. With my son's and Minuteman Press's assistance, I can gain more exposure as an artist. I let my son, Allen, enhance my website, photograph my paintings and post them on Facebook and Instagram. However, I let the staff at Minuteman Press assist me with scanning, reproducing, and mailing my work to my customers. To get more exposure as an artist, I work with my son and Minuteman Press to market and reproduce my work. No matter what parental duties they have or socio-economic status they may be, my project makes it easier for people nationwide to purchase and view my high-quality artwork and ask me to create it for them. My project connects to four values of the South Carolina’s Arts Commission which are accountability, courage, creativity, and relationships.

This project enables out of state customers of low socio-economic status and those who are single parents to have access payment plan options and have their orders shipped to their homes. They can obtain artwork without having to travel to South Carolina to pick up their it. They don't have to spend money on gas to come here saving low-income customers and single parents money and single parents from having to struggle to take care of their children alone on the road. This means that they can check the status of their orders in their own state and have them shipped to their homes. There are also payment options for them which make it possible for them to purchase high-valure artwork. Through my project, low-income customers and single parents can own high-value artwork without having to struggle to purchase it.

The Five Orchards Art Studio enables generations of artists to become proficient in their chosen mediums through private lessons and studio space and market their work through artist services leading to success in the art world.

The Five Orchards Art Studio will provide private lessons, studio space, and professional development services to artists of all skill levels and medium(s). It will be located in Union, South Carolina where there is not much to do in the field of art Given the chance, I believe that the Five Orchards Art Studio can change that. Over several years, my mom has produced artwork for many families and a local funeral home. She has created paintings from a memorial plate of a baby who was stillborn to a family portrait which appears as if everyone was there for the painting at the same time, but they were not. She painted the local funeral home’s viewing room and chapel. In the viewing room, she painted two wall murals: doves flying to heaven and in the chapel praying hands. Now, she would like to help artists become proficient in their chosen medium(s) through private lessons and prepare their work for sales. To further her experience, she would like to enhance her website so that she can reach out-of-state customers, who may desire to have artwork made by her and/or other artists. In the process of enhancing her website to gain customers for her and other artists, she would like to have a studio space set up so that her students and professional artists can practice their skills in a studio setting. They would not need to worry about aprons or smocks to go over their other clothing since they would be supplied along with other art supplies. In addition to art supplies and studio space, the Five Orchards Art Studio will provide artist services, such as typing labels, price sheets, condition reports, and biographies for artists. She would charge a monthly fee which would only to have to be paid for the month(s) the artists actually use the facility or need her services. For any piece of artwork which is produced at my facility, she would ask for a small commission fee for any service/ input put into it. Artists would be able to create and prepare to sell their artwork at her studio.

I plan to promote my artwork in printed and digital formats using a subscription to Facebook AD, Google, Squarespace, and business cards. Social media websites such as Facebook and Instagram, the email service, Gmail, Squarespace, and business cards will be used to inform people of the paintings that other artists and I make. Posts will be written on Facebook and Instagram which will provide readers with detailed information about our work in addition to business cards including visual evidence of it. Due to my son interning at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, the largest arts non-profit center in the state, I have been led to make these choices. Using social media and printed materials, I will make people aware of the work of other artists and I.
