Mike Hopkins Center for Arts and Crafts Gallery Management Internship 

 

Reporting to Allen Hopkins, the executive director, interns will perform the day-to-day operations of working in an art gallery alongside the director. The intern will work on tasks related to current art exhibitions, workshops, and other events. 

 

This is an unpaid internship at least a minimum of 1 hour and 30 minutes up to 4 hours and 30 minutes per week. 

 

Mike Hopkins Center for Arts and Crafts INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The responsibilities and guidelines of the internship include but are not limited to the following responsibilities and guidelines: 

  • Interns are expected to work a minimum of 1hour and 30 minutes up to 4 hours and 30 minutes per week and will be required to sit at the gallery front desk when work needs to be done on the computer. 

  • When there is no work to do on the computer and no other tasks need to be completed, interns are expected to work on their homework and/or artwork   and assist with watching over the gallery. 

  • Interns must be on time for their shift and must work their whole shift. 

  • Any needed schedule changes need to be discussed with the coordinator ahead of time. 

  • Interns should dress either professionally or casually and in accordance with their daily tasks. (Those working in the gallery may need comfortable but appropriate  footwear depending on the tasks, such as closed toe shoes or sneakers.) 

  • Interns should be courteous and helpful to all visitors. 

  • Interns are expected to submit a time sheet by the following session every week. 

  • Interns are expected to read over the organization’s website; be familiar with all upcoming programs and exhibitions, including the bio and body of work(s)in the space; and give tours.  

  • Optionally, interns can work during UCAC events and receptions, including setup and clean up. 

  • Under the supervision of the coordinator, interns must be able to lift at least 50 lbs., use ladders, and stand for long periods of time for gallery de-installation and installation. 

  • Read financial planning and management section of the book titled Strategic Planning in the Arts. 

  • Assist the coordinator with sales when she is unavailable to make a sale. Checks will have to be filled out. 

  • With assistance from the coordinator, interns start and manage a marketing campaign, designing and printing show cards and updating the gallery ‘s Instagram and Facebook: Post,Story,Reel. 

  • If interns can receive academic credit for this internship, it is their responsibility to notify the coordinator and bring in the proper documents for the coordinator to sign. 

  • Since there is no cameras in the gallery, and the coordinator has run errands sometimes, interns are expected to keep the door locked. They should only do this when they have to go to the back of the gallery. 

  • The gallery has insurance coverage for artwork in case of accidental damage of artwork. However, that is no excuse for damaging artwork, and interns will be fired if they repeatedly damage it. 

  • Learn how to fill out contracts between the gallery and artists. 

  • The gallery and the intern can end the internship for several reasons including but not limited to: misconduct, major damage to the gallery, repeated damage to artwork, and illness. 

 

Qualifications 

  • The candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts ;Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio, Art History, Dance, Theater, Arts Administration, Business Management, Business Administration, or Social Work; Diploma of Business Management; or  are a recent graduate of either of these programs preferred but not required.  

  • Some experience working in an art museum or gallery. 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google. 

  • At least 3.0 GPA 

  • Knowledge of Art history and/ or art studio helpful, not required. 

  • Experience with traditional and social media marketing. 

  • Photography skill
